The Day the Earth Stood Still

Published by bostonpride under reviews Edit This

I went to see “The Day the Earth Stood Still”, a scifi movie about the destruction, or near destruction, of the Earth. If you haven’t seen it and you are planning on seeing it, you might not want to read this. I will try to not give away anything important, but basically the theme of the movie is that humans are slowly killing the earth with all our technology and waste, carbon dioxide, etc. The aliens have come to save the Earth itself, not the humans. As Keanu Reeves put it, “If the Earth dies, humans die. If humans die, the Earth survives”. I think playing an emotionless alien was the perfect role for Keanu Reeves. Obviously, expressing emotion, or simply having a soul, is not his strong point. Therefore, playing a role in which he was supposed to be void of a soul was great for him. I think he did well as an alien (his name was Klaatu). The acting was pretty good overall I guess, although there were a few actors that were weak. A lot of the military figures were pretty bad actors (I don’t know their specific names). There were a few blatant plot holes but I do not feel like going into all of them. An ironic part of the movie is when Klaatu, the alien messenger, says that there are only a few planets that can support life like Earth, so in order to save this life-bearing planet, they must wipe out all life on the planet. I did not really understand their thinking behind that. I also thought it was stupid that after Klaatu and the aliens come determined to wipe out mankind, all it takes to change their minds is the lead woman, Helen, to tell them that humans can change. She tells Klaatu that humans will change, and, just like that, he is on her side and he stops the extermination of the human race. At least now we can rest assured that if aliens ever come to wipe us out, we can just tell them not to and they will leave. Thank goodness. All in all, I would give the movie about 2.5 stars. It was very visually appealing. There were great special effects. However, the movie was just a little slow at times and there were a few plot holes that were difficult to circumvent.  It is worth seeing though, since there do not seem to be many great movies out, although “Seven Pounds” starring Will Smith got some good reviews. Thanks for reading and continue to check in.

James Bond Review

I saw Quantum of Solace this weekend, twice actually. I had very high expectations for this, because Casino Royale was my favorite Bond film. These new Bonds have a different feel than the old James Bond movies. There is less of a reliance on gadgets, and more use of physical force. In the old movies, if James Bond wanted to get from roof to roof he would shoot a grappling hook and slide across. In these new movies, Bond simply jumps across, no matter how far of a jump is required.

I did not like Quantum of Solace as much as I liked Casino Royale. I thought the movie moved far too quickly, and jumped around without much plot development. There was not much explanation of who was who; and what was the deal with Vesper’s boyfriend? Was he a bad spy? There was too much left unexplained. However, it was still an enjoyable shoot- em up movie, as Bond films always are. I look forward to the next one. At the end of the credits it said James Bond Will Return….I thought that was obvious, but at least we know there will be another. Hopefully the next one will be more developed. I think the studio rushed this one after the success of Casino Royale. I give it 2.5/4 stars

New Office and Philly finally won

There is another new Office tonight. Hopefully it will be better than the recent episodes; I have been pretty dissapointed with the episodes this season. The Ethics episode was really bad  I thought, as well as the crime aid one. the baby shower one had mild humor, but I am hoping that the Office gets back to its glory days from season 2 and 3. This week’s episode, which starts in under an hour, is supposed to be really funny so I am excited for that. Apparently, Holly is transferred to another branch, forcing Michael and Holly to end their very bizarre relationship.

On another note, the Philadelphia Phillies finally won the World Series, bringing the city of brotherly love its first major sports championship in exacttly 100 years. The Phillies outplayed the Rays in almost all respects, but the dominant factor was the bullpen of the Phillies. The Rays bats were shut down through out almost the entire series, which is a difficult feat. I thought it was a great series, albeit a little tedious because of the rain delay. Good job phillies. Congrats
